decided to set up a company for molecular biothechnology in plants with an initial emphasis on Golden Rice,
a variety of rice produced through genetic engineering to biosynthesize beta-carotene, a precursor of provitamin A in the edible parts of rice.
2001 the company decided to shift its research activities towards production of therapeutic proteins in Physcomitrella patens.
2002 production of proteins in moss was established in a fully contained and controlled photo-bioreactor system.
2003 the company successfully established a double-knock-out moss strain, eliminating potentially immunogenic 1,2-xylose and 1,3-fucose on its N-glycans. Antibodies, produced in this strain were free of these structures. Furthermore, they were proven to trigger cellular cytotoxicity much more efficiently due to a plant-inherent lack of core 1,6-fucose on their N-glycans.
2004 the production of complex proteins in 5L photo-bioreactors was consolidated. BryoSpeed™, the transient production of proteins in moss was established as a fast track process for protein production.
